Accountability

SHP is operationally distinct from the Interior Office and the National Police Service. Its Chief Constable exercises direction and control within the law.

• Policy relationship

  The Interior Office is responsible for the central policy relationship with South Havenstead Police. Ministers do not direct individual police investigations.

• Chief Constable

  The Chief Constable is responsible for lawful, effective and professional territorial policing and for the force's operational decisions.

• Independent conduct oversight

  The Independent Office for Police Conduct provides independent complaints and conduct oversight within its jurisdiction.

• Inspection

  The central police inspection function independently assesses SHP effectiveness, efficiency, legitimacy, standards, capability, safeguarding, readiness and governance within its jurisdiction.

• Disciplinary appeals

  The Police Discipline Appeals Tribunal provides an independent appeal route within its jurisdiction.
